Duststorms were common at Manzanar Camp. In this arid climate, the barracks offered little shelter from the summer heat or winter storms.

The camps were surrounded by barbed wire. Guards with machine guns were posted at watchtowers (see below) with orders to shoot anyone who tried to escape.
